Hedley designed, fabricated, and supplied the HPU and accumulator system for our customers as part of a gas turbine waste heat recovery system specifically for use for the off shore oil & gas industry.
Problem
The precise control of the heat recovery bypass sleeve is critical to the efficiency of the heat recovery system. The customer had traditionally used either pneumatic or very basic hydraulic control of the bypass sleeve, however with the use of ever larger gas turbine system these methods of control were unable to provide the desired efficiency and heat-loss recovery.
Solution
Working in conjunction with our client we developed an electro-proportional control system that provided precise synchronised control of the bypass sleeve actuators, allowing the bypass sleeve to be continually adjusted to maximise the heat energy recovery, optimising steam temperature and subsequent power generation.
We delivered three hydraulic power units, the HPUs were fitted with two 57 litre ASME U stamped 316 stainless shell accumulators for failsafe emergency shutdown. This is for use with nine cylinders. Housed in a stainless-steel tank, carbon steel frame with canopy over to protect from inclement weather. This also included is a valve position controller housed in an explosion proof junction box. Balluf position transmitters and rosemount pressure transmitters. The system is operating on mineral oil. To safety standard class 1, div 1 gas group C&D T3 NEMA 4X hazardous area.
Outcome
Initial trials carried out on our clients R&D facility proved to be successful, with the newly develop hydraulic system providing a significant improvement in the control of the bypass sleeve. Following which a total of three systems were manufactured for deployment in offshore installations in Southeast Asia
